Holiday Writing: MY 3 Tips to Stay Creative During the Festive Season
The holidays are a time of joy spent with family, and friends—but for young and aspiring writers, it can also be a season spent with books, hoping for inspiration to happen. The festive atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for crafting stories or hitting those writing goals. In this post, we’ll share three easy, actionable tips to keep your creativity flowing while still enjoying your hot cocoa and gingerbread cookies. So open your notebook, and let’s dive into the magic of holiday writing!
The 3 ways I use to stay creative during the holidays:
Set a tentative writing routine
Turn Holiday moments into inspiration
Read a book!
1. Set a tentative writing routine
The holidays can get hectic so it’s best to adapt to the increase in tasks you need to do. Start your mornings with a 30-minute writing session before the hustle and bustle of the day. Mornings are known to be great for creativity!
Then in the afternoons, squeeze in some time a writing sprint during the lull between family events. Perhaps write a bit while you wait for the cookies to bake or while you wait for family to arrive! A little consistency keeps you productive without missing the holiday festivities.
And if you still have energy left, do a short writing session before going to bed. You can start by journaling about your day to spark some ideas for your story and to prime your brain for a writing sprint!
2. Turn Holiday moments into inspiration
The holidays are full of experiences that can enrich your writing. Treat this time as a fuel for your creativity! I’ll go over some details that you can use for your story.
Observe what’s happening around you; the laughter of family, the clinking of glasses, the savory smell of food etc…take note of how your senses react to everything around you.
Another detail you can observe are family traditions. What does your family do every holiday season? Make note of the traditions you have or create a new one with an added twist.
Lastly, take note of the chaos that happens during the holiday. The frantic, last minute shopping or the tension between family members. You can spin it either way you want it—dramatic or humorous. These moments can make for endless inspiration for plot twists or character conflicts!
3. Read a book!
The holidays are a perfect time to get cozy with a book. Reading not only helps you unwind but also sharpens your skills as a writer! Get into the holiday spirit by reading Christmas classics like A Christmas Carol. This might inspire you to create your own holiday-themed tale.
If you’re pressed for time, try reading a short-story or read a collection of quick tales for a quick does of inspiration. Choose your genre that resonates with you or one which you’d love to write about.
Don’t forget to have a notepad or phone nearby to jot down ideas! Write down quotes, scenes, places and emotions to help you later!
And that’s it! This was a short post since I’m currently away on vacation. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Please, take care and enjoy the magic of the holidays! See you all soon!
