There’s been a lot of buzz about the impact of AI across various industries. Many fear that AI will replace jobs, dominate companies, or even take over the world like Skynet in Terminator. While the rise of artificial intelligence might seem intimidating, it doesn’t have to be. For both aspiring and seasoned writers (and artists as well) this technology can feel like a threat to creativity.

But I’m here to say we can see AI as a powerful ally, a straightforward tool that can help us unlock our full potential. In this blog post, I’ll discuss three ways how collaborating with AI can enhance our writing and inspire us to craft stories without losing our power as writers.

  1. See AI as a Partner, Not a Replacement.

  2. The Importance of Responsibility & Good Intentions.

  3. See AI as a Testing Ground.

1. Your New Collaborator

When I was writing my draft, I had serious reservations about using AI, especially for research, ideation or writing in general. I thought relying on AI was cheating and meant I wasn’t a writer. But I quickly realized I shouldn’t have to feel that way.

I asked myself, “If I let ChatGPT generate this for me, am I originally the writer?” I didn’t think so. Because I felt I’ve relinquished my creative powers. It felt like I’d given up being imaginative. But, I thought if I use AI as a tool and see it as a collaborator, then my writing can improve.

I started using ChatGPT to help with my research like finding answers to questions I couldn’t find through a Google search. I had questions like “What does a helicopter sound like?” or “What does the inside of an aircraft carrier look and smell like?” or “What materials are traditional Tibetan houses made of?”

Before AI, it took me hours searching on Google, clicking on several pages to find answers to my specific questions. I’d spent more hours watching YouTube for a visual sense but it didn’t help either. Then I decided to use AI to help and it has significantly cut down my research time, allowing me to focus more on writing.

In this new era of technology, AI can help writers brainstorm ideas, research faster, or refine their work, but it shouldn’t take over their creativity. Writers should see AI as a partner or at least an assistant, something that can help enhance their writing process rather than replace their unique voice and imagination. Which brings us to our second point: Intention.

2. Be Responsible and Have Good Intent

As a writer, I know firsthand how easy it is to the trap of letting AI do the heavy lifting. When you input a prompt and watch the AI generate text, it’s tempting to sit back and let it take over the writing process. However, doing so means giving up your creative power.

I wholeheartedly believe that using AI platforms like ChatGPT and Deepseek can disempower you as an author but only if you let it. See, creativity starts with you. You are the creator with an imagination far beyond what a program can do.

When you approach AI with good intentions, you’re more likely to use it mindfully. This means you’re consciously choosing how to AI as a tool to enhance your work rather than use it to do the heavy lifting. Yet, the responsibility to shape your story and maintain your unique voice lies with you. You control your actions and what you do with your life. You do you, right?

One of the way’s I’m being responsible with the use of AI is that I built my own writing assistant called NanaNudge. I wanted to develop a resource that serves as a guide and mentor, rather than a ghostwriter. So, I restricted Nana to teach, inspire and help refine my ideas without writing content for me. I built her to be a supportive buddy who can offer feedback!

My ultimate goal with NanaNudge is to support writers in harnessing AI while ensuring they stay in control of their creativity. She’s still in development, but she happy to say she works as intended!

3. See AI as a Testing Ground

Although much text-generating AI’s don’t restrict their AI in terms of their writing potential, I believe if you’re mindful and responsible with how you use it, then relying on AI to help you finish your manuscript is a great tool to use.

See, AI can be used as an experimental apparatus, testing ideas, themes and styles without the fear of judgment. You can input wild ideas or unconventional themes and tropes and ask the AI what works. This can be liberating. Of course, as long as you hold onto the reigns and not succumb to letting the AI write the entire novel that is.

And much like running experiments, you get good results in terms of a feedback loop. AI tools, like NanaNudge, can provide instant suggestions on grammar, tone and clarity. This instant feedback loop encourages the writer, giving them the confidence to persist in their writing journey.

Where does this leave us?

It’s important to remind ourselves that technology is always growing and ever changing, so it’s essential to adapt and grow alongside it. The power of this new tech lies in our hands and AI can be a powerful tool or rather, a powerful partner in our writing journey.

So don’t be afraid or ashamed of using it, as long you stay mindful and responsible with how we use it. Let AI inspire you, but always stay true to your vision.
